This generally occurs when the candle isn’t allowed to form a uniform pool of melted wax. “Tunneling” may occur if the candle is lit and then extinguished before the pool of melted wax has formed. Try to burn your candle a minimum of 2 hours to insure a sufficient wax pool is created.
Why do wicks get a large black "glob" on them sometimes? TOP
Mushrooming is carbon build up and is normal for scented candles. Long burn times can easily create a mushroom in any candle, especially if the wick isn't kept trimmed to one quarter of an inch.
